What is infertility?
Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after about 12 months of unprotected timed intercourse. There are many causes of infertility and approximately one-third may be due to the male partner, one-third due to the female partner, and one-third related to both partners.
To conceive and achieve a healthy pregnancy, a sequence of events must take place. An mature egg must be produced and released from an ovarian follicle in the woman’s body. For men, motile sperm must be produced and released into the female reproductive system to meet the egg. Once sperm fertilizes the egg, an embryo is formed, which must travel to the, and implant in, the uterine lining- endometrium. After embryo implantation, the clump of cells still have a long way to go before forming a healthy fetus, and eventually, baby. An interruption in one or more of these processes can result in infertility.
Common causes of female infertility:
- Age-related infertility; usually over the age of 35
- PCOS
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
- Hormone imbalance
- Other diseases affecting the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and/or associated organs.
