Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is essential for alleviating the aches and pains of pregnancy, reducing stress, and promoting overall readiness for delivery. Massage appointments can be coordinated with your prenatal visit. Our prenatal massages are open to the public, but first priority is given to our women in Bloom.

Massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care. It is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backache, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches, edema (or swelling), and sore muscles & joints.

In addition, massage for pregnant women reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax your nervous tension — which aids in better sleep — and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.

Eugenia is a certified prenatal massage therapist, who is knowledgeable and passionate about concerns related to body changes during pregnancy; she utilizes a variety of techniques including circulatory massage, deep tissue massage, reiki, and craniosacral. In her practice, Eugenia focuses on prenatal ailments such as shoulder and back aches, sciatica, hips, and fatigue. Massage can be especially beneficial for first time mothers, as it is known to ease anxiety.

What happens during a typical prenatal massage session?

Our exceptional prenatal massage therapist, Eugenia, takes extra care to ensure our pregnant clients are relaxed and comfortable. Positioning techniques with supportive cushions are used to alleviate strain on problem areas when the pressure is applied. She aims to avoid any potential discomfort, while giving you an effective therapeutic massage session.

Through the second trimester, you may prefer to lie on your back with a small, cushioned wedge placed under one hip to provide a slight elevation. Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, Eugenia may also utilize such massage techniques as reflexology or Swedish massage depending on your personal requests and needs.

Massage & Relief of Everyday Symptoms of Pregnancy

Common complaints throughout the three trimesters vary. From skin concerns to breast tenderness, massage can help you through the discomfort in a surprising number of ways.

  • Headaches can be relieved by massage by relaxing pressure points and muscle spasms. If you are prone to headaches, focus will be placed on your head, neck and shoulders to alleviate tension.
  • Increased water volume and tension from the excess baby weight can be relieved by focusing on lymphatic massage and increasing circulation. The increase in fluid flow should diminish the associated swelling and pain as well as helping to “detox” any build-up.
  • Massage stimulates the release of serotonin- your body’s natural pain reliever- making it an excellent aid with the everyday aches and pains that accompany pregnancy. Additionally, the increase in serotonin and dopamine will also help with both sleep and mood regulation.
  • Skin concerns are very common throughout the three trimesters (e.g.pruritus, stretch marks, acne, and dark spots). Eugenia can customize your massage to mainly circulatory techniques, which should aid lymphatic drainage; regular massage sessions will help keep your skin clear over time and help with skin repair mechanisms.
